Last week we had the privelege of attending Showcase 2009 at Sammy's school.
Upon arriving there was a variety of snacks put out for parents, provided by D'reen's Catering. Parents are constantly offering up their skills and time to the school, which is really nice.
The kids are allowed and encouraged to help eachother out, just as grownups would on a daily basis.
Sammy showed off her skills with the moveable alphabet, choosing an object and then building the word next to it with these letters. I thought she did a great job!
...and I think she was pretty proud of herself too!
It was really neat to take a stroll through the elementary classes and see the unique ways that they learn different concepts, and how confident they appeared in their understanding of them.
Years ago, I had seen an ad in one of those leisure booklets that you get in the mail for actually a couple of different Montessori schools. Not knowing what this was about, and having a toddler that would be ready for preschool/school soon, I checked into it right away. As soon as I started reading about Maria Montessori's methods and the philosophy behind these schools, I knew in my heart this is where I wanted my child to be.
Skip ahead a few years later - we had decided to wait until Kindergarten to enroll Sammy, and anyway to make a long story short, it was one of the best decisions we have ever made. Maria Montessori School feels like a second home for Sammy and it is truly amazing to watch her grow as a person and to see her confidence soar as she masters new skills.
If you're child is approaching preschool age, I urge you to consider Maria Montessori as an option. For more information:
